 How To Evaluate Health Plans:

  • Look out for plans that limit or exclude coverage.
  • Know the deductible and how many may apply per family (one, two or three).
  • Understand co-insurance. It is the percentage of the medical expenses paid after the deductible has been met. This is important because it can add up to a lot of money.
  • Co-payments (office visits, prescriptions) are a punishment, not a benefit. Most companies do not have out-of-pocket limits on co-payments.
  • Health insurance is about financial protection. Know the total maximum out-of-pocket from both the deductible and the co-insurance.
  • Know where to go for medical services. Most insurance plans are tied to restricting Preferred Provider Organizations. Deductibles and co-insurance limits may increase for services outside the Preferred Provider Organizations.
